Orchestra Notes
Orchestra starts early next fall with
orchestra camp on Monday and Tuesday August 18th and 19th . We will meet in the instrumental room from
2-4 pm on those two days, and we will perform at the instrumental Ice Cream
Social on August 19th. To
give students an opportunity to prepare for the performance, and also to give
students something to practice, summer music folders have been prepared for
every student. Watch for official
notice of the camp and more complete information in the summer orchestra
mailing.
This year we are planning a big tour
with the band, choir, and orchestra to Florida, during spring break.
For those of you wanting to raise
money to go on the tour to Florida fundraising can begin even earlier than
August 19th. If you would
like to sell Entertainment books and get an early start please come to the high
school band room on
Monday, August 4th between 4 and 5 pm. Read the section on Entertainment books
later in this letter for more info. You
can also start finding sponsors for your birdies for charity card included in
this mailing. The earlier you get
started on these two fundraisers the less competition you will have.
All state
Summer is the best time to prepare for next fall and
All State auditions. Find someone for
private lessons and work on your scales, a solo, tone quality and
technique. Etudes will come out on
August 1st. You can find these at IHSMA.org.
It is best to have all of your other audition materials prepared before
August, so you can focus on the etudes from that point on. All State auditions are October 26th
in Washington Iowa. Anyone auditioning
is encouraged to attend a workshop designed to help you with the etudes and
general technique. This workshop is in
Cedar Falls at the University of

Northern Iowa on Sunday, Sept. 29th. Information will arrive in September. All State is a great honor and is very
competitive, but the reason we encourage everyone to audition is because the
audition itself makes you a better musician as well as a better person. Auditions prepare you for life skills such
as, interviews, pressure performance, preparing to perfection, and many others.

The band, orchestra, and choir are heading for Florida
next spring to perform at Disneyworld.
The trip is scheduled to leave on Saturday, March 20th and
return on Thursday March 25th.
Cost will be $575. This includes
transportation, lodging, 3 days in Disney parks, and one day at Universal
Studios along with seven meals (3 breakfasts and 4 meal coupons for in the
parks). Note the required meeting on
Sept. 30th and plan on making your initial deposit of $100 by that
date. Student account balances can be
used for that deposit.
August Meeting
Our first Instrumental Music Booster Meeting will be
held Monday, August 4th at 7:00 pm.
It is important to have involvement from everyone in band and
orchestra. Please mark your calendar
and make every attempt to be here. With
a trip year, it is especially important to have input and help from all
parents.
Birdies For Charity
Once again this year the
instrumental music department will be collecting pledges for the Birdies for
Charity program. This is a great
way to collect donations for the music department and the students’ accounts
because 100% of the money collected is returned to our organization. People are asked to pledge one cent or more
for every birdie made during the John Deere Classic Golf Tournament, held this
year from Sept. 8-14th. The
grand prize for the one guessing the correct amount of birdies is a 2004 Buick
Rendezvous, but more than 500 other prizes are also awarded to entrants through
a random drawing.
We are asking each student
to request pledges from grandparents, aunts, uncles, or friends so that as much
money as possible can be raised. This
year 80% of the collected pledges will be credited to each student’s
account to help pay trip expenses, with the remaining 20% being deposited in
the department’s (Instrumental Music Boosters) general fund. However, the student collecting the most
paid pledges will receive 100% of the money!
Parents, donations made through this charity are tax-deductible! This is a great way to help out your student
and the band and still receive a tax advantage. Finally, anyone who collects 15 cents or more in pledges can earn
a free one-day pass to the John Deere Classic Tournament. Enclosed with this
newsletter is one pledge card with all the official rules. More pledge cards may be obtained from Mr.
McCartney’s mail box in the front office of North High School, or by contacting
Julie Gill at 391-7919. Completed forms
may be returned to: 1) Mr. McCartney during summer band camp in August: 2) Placed in his mailbox or Mr. Henry’s
mailbox at school: or 3) delivered or sent to Julie Gill at 1006 Emerald Woods
Ct., Davenport. The money will be
credited to the student’s accounts AFTER the pledges are
collected.
We are in the process of planning another exciting year of marching band. Keri Lee and Shannon Helkenn will be Drum Majors and Kristen Runco will be our Field Commander. Student leaders will be elected before school is out this spring. Marching band camp will begin July 31 & August 1 with incoming Freshmen and Drumline. We will rehearse from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Marching fundamentals will be the focus of these two days. Marching Band Camp will run August 4-8 from 1:00pm until 6:00pm. It will be important for you to practice your music before, during, and after marching camp week in preparation for the Ice Cream Social on August 19. Rehearsals will be held, August 11, 13, 15, and 18, to prepare for the Ice Cream Social. Rehearsal times are will be in the evening. Specific times will be announced at camp. Plan on a band party after rehearsal on Friday, August 8th. Details will be announced at the first rehearsal that week.
Music is going to be in folders in the main office. Stop in and pick it up! Memorization will be easier and the band will be better, if everyone will spend some time this summer practicing.
Jazz Band Camp
Jazz band
camp will be August 11-15 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. This camp is for anyone interested in Jazz Band. We will be spending time on a variety of
things, including, improvisation, music for the Ice Cream Social, as well as
contest music for the winter season.
Entertainment
Books
We
are hoping to get a jump this year on everyone with an early start. Last year we didn’t get our books until late
and they were hard to sell. We will be
distributing books to everyone on August 4, from 4:00 – 4:30 pm in the band
room. This is the end of the first day
of camp. Students will be receiving 80% of the profit to their student accounts
because it is a trip year. This could be
up to 12 or 13 dollars depending on how many books we sell as a group. These books are a great value and shouldn’t
be difficult to sell. The other %20 goes into the general booster account and
uniform replacement fund.
